A new startup is banking on the staying power of digital fitness

Eve Smith is furiously pedalling a stationary bike, utterly alone in a darkened room. Bright lights flash to the beat of the music, punctuated by yells designed to motivate the – conspicuously absent – crowd. They’re there, of course, just not in person.
